The OYC Sailing School Program

Dear OYC Sail Student,

Welcome to the Oceanside Yacht Club Learn to Sail program.  Our goal is to make you a competent sailor capable of piloting your own vessel.  The curriculum is a rigorous one but we assume you are just starting out.   We will teach you the basics of sailing. We welcome your questions.  We will make sure you have fun learning to sail.

We know that starting new into sailing can be intimidating.  The thing to remember is that mistakes create the best learning opportunities.  So please don’t worry about doing things right.  Hardly anyone does, in their first experience, including even our fantastic instructors.

You can get started early by reading the textbook.  This will help you become familiar with the terminology that describes parts of the sailboat.  If, when reading through the text, you have a question because something doesn’t make sense, please make a note of the question so you can ask your instructor for clarification.

Sailing can be a bit hard on the palm of your hands from handling the lines on any sailboat.  That is why we recommend that you purchase sailing gloves.

The weekend learn to sail course starts at 9:00 Saturday and Sunday and ends at 4:00pm both days. The “Regatta Room” is our classroom and is at the north end, lower level, of the building which houses OYC, 1950 Harbor Drive North, Oceanside, CA.  That is where we will start the course.

There is a one-hour lunch break from 12-1.  If you bring your lunch, you are welcome to spend the lunch hour in the upper level club house. 

The OYC “Boarding Pass” permits you to enjoy the many benefits of club membership limited for one month.  During this period, you can have dinner, bar privileges, and simply enjoy the spectacular views. 

Finally, we are confident that you will have a lot of fun in the OYC Learn to Sail program and come away with a great sense of accomplishment.
